Why can’t people understand this?

This is all too true—and as a freelance graphic designer, it’s something I wish all (potential) clients will understand when taking on anyone that provides creative services. Yes, I love what I do, but I also need to eat, upgrade my equipment and keep learning new skills, perhaps treat myself to a little something once in awhile. The sad reality is, love for my work will not ensure that I will be able to take care of myself (and my family) when I retire.
While I understand people want to save on expenses (nowadays, who doesn’t?), it’s often frustrating when some businesses don’t value creative professionals enough to pay what the latter deserve. Maybe we just make it look easy (leading to the conclusion that “my teenage kid can do that—for free!”), but that doesn’t mean we don’t put in a lot of effort and time for our clients.
